School Counsellor

We are looking for someone with counselling expertise to work part-time across 5 schools in our Capital City Kāhui Ako. 

The role is not yet clearly defined as it will be negotiated with the appointed counsellor to make the most of the skill set that they bring.


We envisage that the appointed counsellor would

  • have a warm and cheerful disposition and foster positive relationships

  • have experience working in the mental health field and with children who have experienced trauma 

  • provide talking therapy for children and their whānau so they can get through hard times at school or home 

  • work alongside children and their whānau to solve problems and help them develop skills for managing big emotions and shifting negative thinking patterns

  • help children to see and celebrate their unique personalities and strengths 

  • facilitate group counselling sessions (e.g. anxiety, friendships, anger)

  • engage in professional conversations around hauora and act as a resource person to our community of schools

  • advocate for children to support their wellbeing where necessary

  • support children and their whānau to find appropriate information and help for themselves

  • be flexible, adaptable and willing to implement a range of strategies and approaches

  • travel between schools and make home visits 

  • work up to 3 days a week (term time only, during the school day)

  • make referrals to agencies or community groups 

  • keep appropriate records and maintain confidentiality

  • report on work done and impact noticed


It is important to us that we find a counsellor who is the ‘right fit’ for our group of schools and once we find that person we’ll work with them to create a role that makes the best use of their expertise.  This position would initially be fixed term, however it may also be extended.
